BLOODSTAIN PATTERN DOCUMENTATION

Comprehensive and accurate documentation of bloodstain evidence can significantly contribute to the reconstruction of a violent crime.

Course Description:  A (20 hour) course designed and presented by veteran investigators for  crime scene investigators, crime scene technicians, and others involved in crime scene investigation.  Through both lecture and practical exercises, investigators learn and practice accepted methodologies for identifying and documenting discreet bloodstain patterns.  The fluid dynamics of blood and the association of bloodstain characteristics with the actions that caused them is introduced.

Classroom instruction and practical exercises include:

  • Bloodstain terminology.
  • Composition of blood and dynamics of blood in motion.
  • Identifying and describing characteristics of bloodstain patterns.
  • Methodology for documentation of bloodstain patterns.
  • Context bias and confirmation bias in bloodstain pattern documentation.
  • Case studies reinforcing key concepts.
  • Writing bloodstain pattern documentation reports.

All concepts are reinforced through hands-on practical exercises.

Class Requirements: Prior investigative or crime scene experience is helpful but not required.    Course materials are provided in electronic format.  Attendees should bring an electronic device with USB connection, such as a laptop computer, and basic office suite software to access, prepare and save digital work product, and complete fillable forms used in lecture and practical exercises.
