Course Description: A 5-day (40 hour) course designed and presented by veteran investigators for detectives, crime scene investigators, crime scene technicians, and others involved in crime scene analysis.  Through both lecture and practical exercises, investigators learn and practice accepted methodologies for identifying, documenting and classifying bloodstain patterns.  The fluid dynamics of blood and the association of bloodstain characteristics with the actions that caused them are explored.

Classroom instruction and practical exercises include:

  • Bloodstain terminology.
  • Composition of blood and dynamics of blood in motion.
  • Identifying and describing characteristics of bloodstain patterns.
  • Methodology for documentation of bloodstain patterns.
  • Mathematics related to bloodstain patterns and estimating source locations.
  • Context bias and confirmation bias in bloodstain pattern analysis.
  • Application and limitations of bloodstain pattern analysis in reconstructing bloodshed events.
  • Case studies reinforcing key concepts.
  • Writing bloodstain pattern analysis reports.
  • Criteria for courtroom testimony related to bloodstain patterns.

All concepts are reinforced through hands-on practical exercises.
